Activate your flower power

Simple Flower Recipes

By Amanda Powell

Flowers are one of nature’s best presents to us. They have a plethora of uses from wedding bouquets to plate decorations. Some are even edible.

Such as Nasturtium (Tropaeolum majus) Common to North America this 12-inch-tall annual has richly colored red, orange, and yellow flowers from midsummer until the first frost. The leaves have a distinctive round shape. Nasturtium flowers have a peppery, zesty taste that can substitute for mustard in sandwiches. Add to salads or cure in vinegar. They make an attractive garnish on a plate or add color when petals are added to butter.

Calendula (Calendula officinalis) Also known as pot marigold, this annual produces pale yellow to deep orange flowers atop erect, 18-inch stems. Plants bloom from late spring to midsummer, then decline in hot weather. Sow seed in early spring in full sun and well-drained soil; repeat in early July for a fall harvest. Calendula flowers have a slightly bitter flavor and are valued mostly for their color. Use petals in salads, soups, butter, rice, stews, poultry, or in tea. It is sometimes used as a saffron substitute. Dry individual petals on paper (petals shouldn’t touch each other); store in a moisture-tight container.

Even Roses (Rosa species) Flower size, fragrance, and flavor vary among the many rose species and varieties. Generally the flowers of the older types, such as rugosa roses, are the most flavorful. Roses need full sun and a rich, well-drained soil. They usually require regular watering, fertilizing, and pruning. Roses have a perfumed taste. Pick off the petals and remove the whitish, bitter base. Add to salads or make jelly.

We can use them in flower essences, and chocolates are popular to adjoin with flower waters. Commonly skin care products include flower extracts.

According to the Dr. Hauschka way the cleansing routine is a physical process while the toning routine stimulates the skin's own ability to self-cleanse. Strong and elastic pores mean proficient removal of excretions and free-radicals. For a night time routine get into the habit of cleanse, tone and leave it alone. The reason for this is to allow the skin to recuperate from our daily activities and regenerate for the next day.

Start with a cleanser to remove debris and dirt. Practice a slow and gentle cleansing to unwind. For all skin conditions the Dr. Hauschka Cleansing Cream has sweet almond meal for a gentle exfoliation and extracts of Chamomile and St. John’s Wort for restorative and protective properties.

One of my favorites is the Clarifying Toner by Dr. Hauschka. With botanical ingredients formulated for oily and blemished skin, the nasturtium extracts lead to radiant balance. Calendula (calendula officinalis) also bestows great balance to the active lifestyle and allows the skin to be receptive to the cleansing process.

After your nightly routine settle down with a good book, a warm cup of tea and a few Rose Infused Chocolate covered strawberries. They are simple to make and scrumptious to devour.

Chocolate Infused Strawberries

1 block of Dark Chocolate

1 bottle of Rose Water

1 Basket of Fresh Picked Strawberries

Wax Paper

Double Boiler

Slow melt dark chocolate in double boiler; add Rose water to taste about 2-3 tbsp Dip strawberries in melted chocolate and place on wax paper to harden.

There are an abundance of flowers to utilize. So many recipes and uses for flowers. From the garden to the kitchen Mother Nature supplies us with numerous ingredients for health and beauty.

Ready for Action Masque

Ready for action masque

People of all races and ages get acne. Acne usually occurs on the face, neck, back, chest, arms and shoulders. For the ladies breakouts commonly appear during their cycle. Guys notice them just before a big event. Prom seems to be the big stress maker and interviews for a new job bring them out as well. Not to mention a first date, just luck, huh! Not really.
Here's the scoop.
If the plugged hair follicle, or comedo, stays beneath the skin, it is called a closed comedo and produces a white bump called a whitehead. A comedo that reaches the surface of the skin and opens up is called a blackhead because it oxidizes and looks black on the skin's surface.
There are so many factors that cause this, from nutritional intake to hormones trying to produce more sebum.
There are a few options to speed up the clearing process.
1. Call your nearest Esthetician
They tend to have a less invasive plan to restore a healthy complexion.
With herbal preparations and deep-cleansing masque for effective treatment of blemishes and blackheads.
Any good esthetician will refer out to a dermatologist if they can no longer assist your condition.
2. Contact a Certified Nutritionist
By monitoring your food consumption they have the ability to help you understand what your body is reacting to.
They may eliminate one item every week until the cause of inflammation is detected.
3. Try to relax and breath. Stress just makes it worse.
Here is my favorite recipe after some experimenting.

2 tablespoons Bentonite Clay
1 teaspoon Organic Jojoba Oil
4 drops Chamomile EO

Mix thoroughly (you want the consistancy of icing so it glides on)
then brush onto a clean face and let sit for 10 to 20 minutes.
Then remove with a warm damp cloth. It does clump up during removal.
Use another towel to catch debris and return it to the earth.

I love this recipie because when bentonite clay absorbs and swells up, it is stretched open like a highly porous sponge.
Toxins are drawn into these spaces through electrical attraction and bound. Bentonite clay is made up of a high number of tiny platelets, with negative electrical charges on their flat surfaces and positive charges on their edges.
The name "bentonite clay" refers to a clay first identified in cretaceous rocks in Fort Benton,
Wyoming. Although bentonite deposits can be found throughout the world, many of the largest concentrations of clay are located in the Great Plains area of North America.
The Organic Jojoba (pronounced ho-HO-ba) is a botanical extract of the seed of the jojoba tree (Simmondsia chinenis). What’s interesting about it is that it isn’t actually an oil, but rather what they call a wax ester.  Because out of all of the compounds in nature, this wax ester is the most similar to human skin oil (sebum). It is conceived that applying jojoba to the skin can guide the skin into thinking it is producing enough oil, thus balancing oil production. The bottom line for us is that jojoba oil is non-comedogenic so we can use it for just about anything.
There are a few excellent types of chamomile essential oil. Chamomile German is a beautiful deep dark blue due to its high azulene content. Bonus properties are antibacterial, antiseptic and disinfectant. Better still it is an anti-inflammatory which lessens the appearance of redness. And just when you thought chamomile couldn't get any better it is also used for sunburn and regeneration treatments.

Ayurvedic Massage Training

Ayurveda is a 5000 year old science from India designed to return humans to a state of balance with nature. This training introduces the Massage Therapist to traditional principles which are then applied into individualized sessions with clients. The techniques taught in this class involve using warm herbal infused massage oils for detoxification and rejuvenation of the physical, emotional and mental body of the client. By attending this course, students will be able to:

-Discuss basic principles of Ayurvedic Dosha Theory.
-List the indications and contraindications for application.
-Explain the effects of Abhyanga on the body/mind/spirit.
-List which oils and herbs shall be used in specific situations.
-Create an ideal layout for an Abhyanga treatment room.
-Perform the Abhyanga comfortably-2 and 4 handed

---------------------------------

You wonder about the subtle aspects of your massage experience. Some questions that may arise include:
* What oil should be used for each individual?
* How do the seasons and time of day affect each individuals healing?
* How do emotion, thought and prayer play into affecting the healing process of each person,in relation to massage therapy?
* How do I address conversations about holistic healing with my massage client/therapist?
* In what way do stretches play into my healing in the Ayurvedic model?

Simply, what we are looking for is to EXPERIENCE WHOLENESS WITHIN AND IN RELATION TO OUR ENVIRONMENT.

WHERE YOU CAN PRACTICE ABHYANGHA-

Wash your skin gently

  • Cleansing is an essential part of caring for your skin. The key is to treat your skin gently.
Use warm water and limit shower time to about 10 minutes or less, and use warm, rather than hot, water. Hot water and long showers remove oils from your skin.
  • Avoid strong soaps. Strong soaps — those most capable of stripping oil from your skin — can leave your skin dry. Instead, choose soap free or mild soaps with added oils and fats. Good choices include handcrafted and locally made soaps
  • Avoid chemical additives. If your skin is sensitive, avoid products containing perfumes or dyes. These can irritate your skin and may trigger an allergic response. Look for natural ingredients that you can read.
  • Remove eye makeup carefully. Use a soft sponge, cotton cloth or cotton balls when removing eye makeup to avoid damaging the delicate and thin tissue around your eyes. If you wear heavy, waterproof makeup, you may need to use an oil-based product, to remove makeup.
Pat dry. After washing or bathing, gently pat or blot your skin dry with a towel so that some moisture remains on the skin. Then moisturize your skin with an oil or cream in the morning. Applying moisturizer in the evening prevents the skin from repair of crazy free-radicals.
  • Kermit said being green isn't easy. Yet we can start with Biodynamics. Biodynamic farming is a natural method of composting our gardens with out chemicals. If your skin care line just incorporated this, kudoos to them. Biodynamics have been around since before the 1800's. I found that Dr. Hauschka Skin Care has been doing this since they began. Wash your skin gently with organic cleansers, after all we are organic beings.

Experience Skin Care Daily

From Garden to Skin

If one could pick the flowers out of their garden and harvest them for a cleanser or masque, you would be practicing an “ancient tradition.” Plants have so many uses for example the power to heal. Increasingly women are becoming more aware of herbal skin care.
Look around your kitchen the ingredients for a masque are right before your very eyes. Generally used for sun burn Aloe has wonderful benefits when combined with other ingredients. Not to mention that yoghurt taste delicious, it also can be used externally for sensitive skin. Cucumbers blended with yoghurt and aloe makes a great masque for soothing and calming, redness and irritated skin.
Our skin is designed to protect and renew. Just like the moon, your skin has a cycle of elimination and regeneration. One way to maintain beautiful skin is to cleanse twice daily. Those dancing feet may be tired but your skin will tell you all about it later if you forget to wash your face before bedtime. If you leave anything on your skin at night you are not getting true beauty sleep. Moisturizing heavily or too often may create dependant skin and result in dry skin. The fact is that while you sleep the skin is busy adjusting to its atmosphere and trying to remain healthy. By cleansing the skin you are removing not only what is on your face but eliminating the free radicals. These are commonly known as environmental factors such as pollution, smoke and herbicides.

Ritual for the skin

Set aside an hour every evening. Start with a large bowl of steaming water and sprinkle a fragrant flower in the bowl such as Lavender adding green tea has antioxidant effects. Along with its gentle easing effect it also reduces the appearance of redness. Use a soft hand towel and soak in your warm water, wring out the excess and apply to the face for one minute. This practice helps open pores, awaking your skin to remove impurities. Cleaners these days are loaded with foam and bubbles; although fun they may contain harmful materials that irritate the skin. Cleansing with a Lemon infused milk or cream is a healthy approach. The Milk is skin friendly with lemon, a natural antiseptic, it strengthens skin’s elasticity. Lather this on with a light massage being gentle around the eyes where the skin is the thinnest. A second cleanse with the addition of sugar to your cream will exfoliate lightly and soften rough skin. Not just for ladies, this goes for you guys also. Remove with a light press and roll of the hand cloth. You just exfoliated so you will not need the extra wiping of the skin. Tone the skin lightly with witch hazel. This balances the ph level of the skin. Have your masque premixed for easier application. This is the fun part. If you do not have one of those fan brushes from your local art supply store you can use your hands to apply the masque. Place your cucumber slices over your eyes. Sit back and unwind for ten minutes. If the cat has not licked off the masque by now you can delicately remove it with your hand cloth. Breathe. Now, lightly press your dry towel to remove excess water. If your skin is just too tight for comfort after a few minutes then apply a light pea size amount of moisturizer to the dry areas and get some true beauty sleep.

List of ritual items
1 Large Bowl
1 hand cloth
1 dry towel
1 small bowl for masque
2 cucumber slices
1 cleanser
1 toner
1 masque
1 moisturizer

Choosing wisely

There are environmental work groups out there that can assist you in choosing your product for skin care. When I was in school for esthetics, I did research on ingredients and broke them down to find out what was in my cabinet. Holy Shitake, cow girl! What was I thinkin’? The stuff in my cabinet was now an alien to me. How could I possibly put that on my skin knowing that it was that harmful?
I found a Holistic Skin Care line that I could use and responsibly offer to my clients. If you want someone else to do it for you, call your local spa and schedule a facial. Just do your research first and don’t be afraid to ask questions. For example, do you carry an organic, holistic or natural product line? Harmony and balance is just a facial away.
